Finishing Table Description

The Kongsberg i-XE series is a new range of automated digital finishing systems for signs and display. It is based on the technology and robust architecture of the Kongsberg i-XL-Series of large format digital flatbed cutting tables.

Tooling

The Kongsberg i-XE10 features an entirely new tooling system. It is designed for high productivity and a wide range of materials.

The permanently mounted toolhead offers 2 configurable tool positions with quick connectors, prepared for a range of advanced tool stations. In addition, the toolhead holds the i-cut vision control camera and the laser pointer. It can also hold a ballpoint pen and a measuring probe.

Tool stations include:

PressCut tool: A pressure controlled cutting tool with an internal motor for fast response and exact tool pressure control.

VariCut tool: Used for kiss cutting with fine depth tolerance as well as through cutting.

Static knife tool: Through cutting of thin, rigid material such as carton board and polycarbonate.

Reciprocating knife tool: Suitable for single-flute corrugated board up to and including C-flute and other light-duty fibrous materials.

Crease tool: Crease wheels for creasing folding carton and corrugated board.

Kongsberg i-XE i-Cut system

The i-XE10 table has an integrated i-cut vision system in the toolhead. This camera first measures actual dimensions and positions on the actual printed result. Then, finishing is adapted to the shape of the graphics.

The i -cut Vision control system and i –script workflow allows die-less cutting contours to perfectly match printed images, improving overall productivity and quality for the Esko Kongsberg i -XL and i -XE series of cutting tables.

The combined offering delivers a very powerful finishing solution for all pre-printed materials to produce packaging, signage, displays and POPs. The i -cut Vision control system is integrated in the Kongsberg table with the i-Cut camera inside of the Kongsberg cutting, creasing and milling tool head (MultiCut). Esko

Kongsberg MultiCut System

With the camera, each printed object is measured, using register marks, to define the position and to compensate for any dimensional changes, distortions or material variations like shrinkage or stretching. The i-Cut software automatically fine-tunes each cut contour for perfect cut-to-print. The i-script software is the interface between the digital print RIP software and the i-cut digital finishing system, and connects and automates the graphic design process and the finishing data. With i-script, the operator does not have to re-register the tool head for each printed element on each sheet.

Finishing Table Features

• Advanced routing/milling support: Several new routing/milling features are available directly from the i-cut® software. These include, among others, control of inside/outside cutting, curve direction, tool diameter, material thickness, and pass depth.

By editing these simple parameters, users are able to create complex, multi-pass cutting production settings without developing additional layers, or editing curves. They will easily produce cleaner, smoother-edged graphics on virtually all materials, including acrylic, PVC, plastics, and woods. This is extremely significant with the number of wide format digital presses that are being tied to Kongsberg tables for full production systems.

• Distortion reporting: i-cut® is the only vision registration system that is able to compensate for non-linear distortion caused by material instability, finishing procedures, or even the printing process itself.

With distortion reporting, an operator can understand how much distortion is really occurring in jobs. i-cut is also able to save all distortions to a .CSV file that can easily be imported into any spreadsheet application, for further review or systematic quality control.

• ai-CutTM Plug-In for Adobe Illustrator: This plug-in was specifically built to help designers prepare files faster and easier for the i-cut workflow.

The ai-CutTM plug-in is absolutely free, and can be downloaded here.

Dramatic reduction in design time

Automatic, intelligent insertion of registration marks

Easy selection of registration mark type, size and color

Automatic i-cut layer generator

Preflight for i-cut filter

Conveyer System

The Kongsberg i-XE10 can be equipped with the conveyer system for automated material processing. Production applications, requiring continuous loading of material by pushing material on the conveyer belt and moving the belt, are made easy.

The table can be extended with a 1100 mm (43") passive area covered by the conveyer belt for material collection while cutting continues.

Sheet Feeding

The MGE sheet feeding system features a "Pick & Place" unit along with a loading table, on which sheets are stacked for finishing. The sheets are picked up with suction cups and placed on the Kongsberg i-XE10 conveyer belt for transport onto the finishing table. Finished material can then be collected from the belt on an off-load table or moved to the conveyer extension table for manual unloading.
